‘Bass Lord Bavuma ka hee intezaar tha’ – Fans react as South Africa qualify for ODI World Cup 2023
Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa; Rob Walter, the white-ball coach; the players, the management, and the entire country would have all exhaled a sigh of relief knowing that they won’t have to go through the qualifying process for the Cricket World Cup 2023, which would take place later in India.
Due to their early losses in the ODI Super League (the route to direct qualification), the Proteas were at risk of missing out on a straight qualification. The forfeiture of the ODI series against Australia didn’t help either. However, by defeating England 2-1 and the Netherlands 2-0 in the three-match series, they gave themselves the best chance to advance directly to the main event. The only other candidate for the final berth, which was the eighth, Ireland, had a three-match series against Bangladesh. Therefore they weren’t yet guaranteed a spot.
Ireland will now have to play in the World Cup qualifying rounds
With 98 points, South Africa completed their Super League campaign. Ireland had 68 points and needed to win all three games in order for them to advance directly. Ireland could not afford a draw, a no-result, or even a loss because each team would receive 10 points for a victory.
But Chelmsford’s weather had other plans, as the rain dashed any expectations Ireland might have had. On the strength of a strong performance from the pace trio of Josh Little, Mark Adair, and Graham Hume, Ireland did well with the ball to restrict Bangladesh to 246/9. However, the Irish team’s chances of directly qualifying for the World Cup were dashed by persistent rain interruptions, which continued even when they were 65/3 behind.
Ireland earned 5 points despite there being no outcome, although they will now have to compete in the World Cup qualifying rounds. With two games remaining at the same location on Friday and Sunday, Ireland still has a chance to win the series.
