Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni turns 42 today, he continues to astound fans with his ageless charm and unconditional passion for the game. However, as seen throughout the IPL 2023 season, the Chennai Super Kings captain still has a lot to give on the cricket pitch. Dhoni’s effect on Indian cricket and the sport as a whole cannot be understated.

He is known for his astute leadership, amazing finishing abilities, and calm composure under pressure. The wicketkeeper from Jharkhand, who began his career as a long-haired, dashing batter, quickly became one of the most famous personalities in cricket, owing to the amount of success he achieved on the field. He led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to win their fifth IPL title in 2023.ย  MS Dhoni continues to establish himself as one of the best to have ever played the game.

MS Dhoni as a captain

Dhoni made his India debut in 2004 and wowed everyone with his reckless attitude with the bat. While he remained one of the entertainers on the field, it was his leadership that brought out the best in him and showed the fans a new side of him that would be associated with him for the remainder of his playing career. Dhoni’s leadership, calmness under pressure and exceptional skills as a wicket-keeper batsman have earned him a special place in the hearts of cricket fans worldwide.

Dhoni took over as the captain of the squad for the 2007 T20 World Cup, although India were far from favourites. However, a youthful Indian team led by the mercurial skipper would surprise everyone by becoming the first 20-20 World Champions. He is the first and only captain in cricket history to have won all three white-ball tournaments: the 20-20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup, and the Champions Trophy.

The CSK skipper has made a promise to the fans to be back for one more season in the IPL. He said, “Looking for an answer? This is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love I have received all over. The easy thing would be to walk away from here, but the harder thing would be working hard for 9 months and trying to play another IPL. It would be a gift from me, won’t be easy on the body.”
