‘Bhai ne thandi me pasine chura diye’ – Fans react as Dean Elgar smashes magnificent century against India in 1st Test
In the first Test match that promises to be unforgettable for Dean Elgar, he stole the spotlight with a magnificent century. Adding a layer of brilliance to his farewell test at his home ground, Supersports Park in Centurion, Elgar outplays India. Facing a tricky wicket, Elgar’s gritty innings guided South Africa to a comfortable total of 194/3 at the end of the second session on Day 2, with the left-hander accumulating 115 runs.
Despite an early setback, Elgar, with his seasoned approach, troubled the Indian bowlers, leaving them seemingly clueless on how to contain him. The Indian debutants, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, failed to make an impact. They leaked runs consistently, providing South Africa with the upper hand.
The struggles in the field, coupled with the poor performances of Krishna and Thakur, left India grappling with a deficit in opportunities and runs. The duo bowled a combined 19 overs, conceding nearly 100 runs, amplifying India’s challenges in the ongoing Test.
Can India make a comeback in the third session?
Earlier, after India posted a total of 245/10 in their first inning, star pacer Mohammed Siraj made an early breakthrough by dismissing Aiden Markram. Despite the setback, Elgar, alongside Tony De Zorzi, constructed a resilient 93-run partnership for the second wicket. However, India staged a comeback after lunch, with Jasprit Bumrah dismantling the opposition.
Bumrah’s prowess was evident as he dismissed the set by Zorzi, who contributed 28 runs, and swiftly followed up by removing Keegan Petersen in the next over. The South African batter managed only two runs before Bumrah’s precision sent his off-stump cartwheeling. Although India showed resilience, South Africa currently holds a dominant position in the match, leaving the Indian team struggling to secure a breakthrough. India will need some quick wickets from Siraj and Bumrah, as South Africa just trails by 51 runs.
