‘Bhai tu better team deserve karta hai’ – Fans react as Marco Reus was in tears after narrowly missing out on Bundesliga title on final machday
In the dramatic final day of German football on May 27, Bayern Munich surpassed rival Borussia Dortmund to win the 11th consecutive Bundesliga title. With a two-point advantage over the defending champions going into the last game, Dortmund needed either Bayern to lose on Saturday or a victory for them. To end the last day of the league, Bayern defeated FC Koln 2-1 while Edin Terzic’s team drew 2-2 with Mainz at home.
While Dortmund conceded an early goal in their match against Mainz, French winger Kingsley Coman gave Bayern the early lead against Koln. Koln played well at home and scored an equaliser in the 81st minute while Bayern only managed four shots on goal. Dejan Ljubicic easily converted the penalty after Serge Gnabry handled the ball inside Bayern’s penalty area to force extra time.

However, in the 89th minute, Jamal Musiala, a 20-year-old German attacking midfielder, scored a spectacular goal for Bayern with an assist from Serge Gnabry. However, all eyes were on Signal Iduna Park, where Dortmund was behind 2-0 at the break. In the 69th minute, left-wingback Raphael Guerreiro scored the first goal for Dortmund, and in the extra time, former Bayern defender Niklas Sule equalized leading to talk of a triumph. However, Mainz held Dortmund to a 2-2 draw and prevented them from winning the league.
Bayern and Dortmund were tied for first place in the league with 71 points each, but the higher goal difference of the former was always going to work against the five-time winners. Bayern Munich won the championship after the match, and Dortmund head coach Erin Terzic thanked them for their 32nd victory in the Bundesliga.
“Before I want to talk about the game, I would like to congratulate FC Bayern Munich. It’s the most honest title you can win. If you’re up there after 34 matchdays, no matter how it happens, you deserve it,” Borussia Dortmund head coach Erin Terzic was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference.
