Birmingham Police’s Strict Action Against The Racial Allegations Made In Edgbaston Test
From 1 July 2022, India was playing the fifth rescheduled Test match against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Speaking of the match, England pulled off a record-breaking run chase of 378 runs in the fourth innings to level the series (2-2). Jonny Bairstow was the star of the show as he scored two centuries in both innings.
However, during that pivotal match, an unwanted incident took place when Indian fans were racially abused by some fans from the stand. This incident also opened up the existing security measures for fans at Edgbaston. However, on 8 July 2022, Birmingham police confirmed that a man had been arrested after allegations of racist behaviour during that match earlier this week.
New security measures Will Be Deployed At Edgbaston
Speaking about the incident, Warwickshire revealed that new security measures will be considered to avoid such racist incidents further. Stuart Cain, Warwickshire’s chief executive, said that they will work harder to ensure everyone’s safety and they will deploy undercover spotters for the second T20I between England and India at Edgbaston on Saturday (9 July 2022).
On the other hand, Birmingham police said that the arrested man will be in custody for questioning. They said: “A 32-year-old man has been arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence after reports of racist, abusive behaviour at the test match in Birmingham on Monday. He remains in custody for questioning.”
Stuart Cain also issued an apology to the victimised fans as he ensured to make Edgbaston, a safe palace for everyone. “I want to apologize directly to any fans who were subjected to racist abuse. Everyone at Edgbaston will work hard to do better, and they are welcome back with open arms in the future,” he concluded.
Speaking about the ongoing three-match T20I series, India thrashed England in the first T20I by 50 runs. Hardik Pandya was the star of that game with his brilliant performance with both the bat and ball. Now, the next two matches are scheduled on 9 and 10 July 2022 respectively, followed by a three-match ODI series.
