Cameroon-born Breel Embolo helps Switzerland beat his country of birth in FIFA World Cup 2022
On Day Five (November 24) of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, Switzerland and Cameroon locked horns in the first game of the day. Notably, both teams played each other for the first time in men’s competitions. Talking about the FIFA rankings of both teams, Switzerland is ranked 15th while Cameroon is placed 43rd. Meanwhile, the game marked the opening of their World Cup campaign.
The Central African side, Cameroon were searching for their first win in 20 years. The way they played, they looked hungry for the win. Talking about ball possession, their ball possession rate was 49 percent which shows how much they dominated the game. However, they were tamed by a player who was born in their homeland but raised in the opposition’s homeland.
Breel Embolo was born in Cameroon but was raised in a European country. He scored in the 48th minute of the game which proved decisive for the Red Brigade. The Indomitable Lions (Cameroon) had outclassed their opponents in the first half and kept them at bay. However, they had their first chance of scoring before the combination of the Swiss goalie and Karl Toko Ekambi sent the ball over the bar.
The Swiss might have conceded a goal if not for the defender blocking the opponents’ efforts. In the end, a combination of half-chances missed and the heroics of Embolo combined for Cameroon’s loss. With this, their wait for their first win in the World Cup continues.
