One of the most intense rivalries of the Indian T20 League was on display in the 14th match of the ITL 2022. The match will be remembered for one of the best innings in the tournament’s history. The streak of toss-winning captains deciding to field first continued even in this match. It was Kolkata, that won the toss and decided that Mumbai will bat first. Umesh Yadav once again delivered in the powerplay, picking up the big wicket of Rohit Sharma in the third over. Mumbai decided to back Dewald Brevis in this match in place of Tim David. Brevis impressed everybody during his stay at the crease scoring 29 off 19 deliveries.

Along with Ishan Kishan, Brevis put up a partnership of 39 runs before being dismissed. Ishan Kishan soon followed Brevis scoring 14 runs off 21 deliveries. From here on Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma put on a partnership of 83 runs. Suryakumar scored a brilliant half-century. He was dismissed by Pat Cummins for 52 runs off 36 deliveries. Notably, this was the first match for Yadav in this edition of the tournament.  Tilak Varma stayed not out at 38 off 27 deliveries. Kieron Pollard provided Mumbai with a power-packed finish scoring 22 runs off 5 deliveries. He smashed 3 sixes in his short stay at the crease. Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for Kolkata picking up 1 wicket from his 4 overs giving away 25 runs. Though Pat Cummins picked up 2 wicket but he was very expensive, conceding 49 runs from his four overs. Mumbai finished with a total of 161 runs for the loss of 6 wickets from their 20 overs.

Kolkata was shaky at the beginning of their chase. Ajinkya Rahane failed to impress agains and was dismissed for just 7 runs in the 5th over of the innings. Shreyas Iyer (10 off 6) followed Rahane and Kolkata was 2 down for 35 in the 6th over of their innings. Kolkata kept losing wickets but they kept the required within reach. Venkatesh Iyer played a steady knock and was storing his fire power for the death overs of the innings. Kolkata was depending on the muscle power of Andre Russell to take them to victory. But Tymal Mills dismissed the threat in Dre Russ in the 14th over for 11 runs off 5 deliveries. Pat Cummins came in to crease and started taking on the Mumbai bowlers. He gave Kolkata the much needed momentum in the chase. At the end of the 15th over Kolkata was 127 for 5 and required 35 runs of the final five overs. But Pat Cummins had no intentions of playing for so long. He just smashed Daniel Sams for 35 runs in the 16th over of the innings and finished the match. Kolkata won the match with 4 overs remaining. Pat Cummins scored 56 of 15 deliveries, scoring the fastest half century in the history of the Indian T20 League. Venkatesh Iyer stayed not out on 50 off 41 deliveries. Kolkata won the match by 5 wickets.
