 Cheteshwar Pujara faces one game suspension as Sussex Cricket Club penalized 12-points for on-field conduct

The Sussex team has been fined for a 12 point deduction penalty in the current season of County championship for getting four penalties in one season of the tournament. The team’s captain and Indian middle order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has been suspended for a game by the England cricket board’s professional conduct regulations. Notably, Sussex team and Cheteshwar Pujara have accepted the charges and penalties without questioning them further. 

As per the England cricket board’s professional conduct regulation 4.29, the team is liable for a 12 point deduction from the table of the tournament. While as per the professional conduct regulation 4.30, the captain of the team when, the penalties received in the matches has to be suspended for full game. 

ECB issued a statement while officially disqualifying Cheteshwar Pujara for one game

“By virtue of receiving two additional fixed penalties in the County Championship match against Leicestershire on 13 September 2023, Sussex CCC has now met the threshold of four fixed penalties in one season, having previously received two fixed penalties in the Championship earlier in the season,” read the England cricket board statement.

“Regulation 4.30 of the Professional Conduct Regulations sets out that it shall be a separate offence for the captain where the same individual captained the team in all of the matches in which the fixed penalties were received, and that the captain will receive an automatic suspension of one match from that competition,” added the statement.

After the penalty was imposed, Sussex who previously stood on the third position with 129 points, have now slipped down to the fifth position with 117 points. The players who had received the penalties previously, Tom Haines, Jack Carson and Ari Karvelas have also been made unavailable from the team’s next match by head coach Paul Farbrace.

“Tom Haines and Jack Carson have been made unavailable for selection by Head Coach Paul Farbrace due to their conduct in the previous game. Ari Karvelas is also unavailable until an investigation into an incident in the Leicestershire game has been concluded”, read the statement by Sussex.
