Daniil Medvedev books place in US Open 2023 final after beating World Number 1 Carlos Alcaraz
The final grand slam of the year is witnessing its final stages. The finalists for the men’s draw for this year are clear as Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev are ready to square off at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Medvedev beat current US Open holder and World Number 1 Carlos Alcaraz to book his place in the summit clash of the 2023 US Open.
Djokovic had already booked his place in the finals as he won the other semi-final. The Serbian beat the local lad and unseeded Ben Shelton in straight sets. The final margin of win read 6-3, 6-2, and 7-6. Winning the third set saw Djokovic claim the tie-break with a 7-4 margin to book his place in the final.
Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz headed into the semi-final game knowing Djokovic lay in wait for them. The 36-year-old wrote himself into the history books by reaching all the finals of the Grand Slams held in 2023.
Medvedev overcomes Alcaraz in four-set battle to oust the World’s Number 1
The first set of the Medvedev and Alcaraz encounter was a closely fought battle. Both the players won their respective games in the first set. The two players then went into a tie-breaker and that’s where the Russian showed his class. The 27-year-old won the tie-breaker with a 7-3 margin to take the first set 7-6.
The second set saw Medvedev continue his domination over Alcaraz as he beat the World Number 1 easily. He won the second set with a 6-1 margin to take a 2-0 lead with a flawless game of tennis. Alcaraz who is the defending US Open champion really had no answers in the second set.
Alcaraz had his backs against the wall in the third set and he made a fine comeback. The World No. 1 won the third set with a 6-3 margin to make the score-line 2-1. The match went into the fourth set with Medvedev looking for a straight sets win. Alcaraz though held his own as the crowd got to the edge of their seats.
The fourth set saw Medvedev break the serve of Alcaraz and establish a lead. The Russian kept his composure as he held his nerve to move one step closer to the final. Medvedev then made it to the final as he won the final set with a 6-3 margin and booked a date against Djokovic.
The Serbian has already won the Australian Open and the French Open and reached the finals of Wimbledon this year. He will be looking to win his third grand slam of the year and the 24th of his career when he locks horns against Medvedev.
