‘Divided by British, United by British’: Fans excited as Mohammed Rizwan and Cheteswar Pujara play for the same team
India-Pakistan is considered the mother of all rivalries in the cricketing world. But due to the political tensions between the two countries, the fans have been denied bilateral action between the two teams for over a decade. India and Pakistan face off only in the international tournaments nowadays.
But a recent development has excited the fans of both the nations. The wicket-keeper batter from Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan and Indian Test cricketer Cheteswar Pujara is a part of the same team in County Championship Division 2. Both the players are playing for the Sussex County team and the fans are all excited to see them bat together.
Cheteswar Pujara has represented India in 95 Tests and has scored 6713 runs in them at an average of 43.9. But in recent times he has suffered from a lack of form and was excluded from the national team in their latest series. Pujara’s stint with Sussex is part of improving his game and reviving his form for the purest format of the game.
Mohammed Rizwan, on the other hand, is an integral part of the Pakistan team in all three formats of the game. In the recently concluded series of Pakistan against Australia, Rizwan was an active member of the Pakistan team. In a break from international cricket, Rizwan is playing county cricket to notch up his batting skills.
Sussex is currently ranked last in the County Championship Division 2 points table having lost the single game they had played till now. The presence of Pujara and Rizwan will definitely provide solidity to the middle order of the team. In their second match against Derbyshire, Sussex will be seen batting second. The fans are definitely awaiting the moment when the duo shares the crease and reunites the two nations on the cricketing field once again.
