Hyderabad faced Bangalore in the 54th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.  The pitch looked slow and the ball gripped the surface from the very beginning of the match. But the fans remained witness to some excellent batsmanship from the Bangalore batters, as they won the match dominating the opposition in all departments.

Bangalore won the toss and decided to bat first in the match. They were given an early jolt as Virat Kohli was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings. It was the third golden duck for the talismanic Indian batter in the tournament and much to the dismay of the whole cricketing world his slump in run-scoring form continues. Coming back to the match, Bangalore recovered very nicely from the early shock courtesy of Rajat Patidar and Faf du Plessis. The duo stitched a partnership of 105 runs off 73 deliveries and brought their team back into the match. Patidar scored 48 runs off 38 balls before being dismissed in the 13th over by Jagadeesha Suchith. Faf however continued strong at the other end and got Maxwell to partner with him.

Faf and Maxwell got Bangalore to 159 runs in 18.2 overs before Maxwell (33 of 24) was dismissed. What followed next was pure carnage by Dinesh Karthik. The wicket-keeper batter smashed 25 runs in the last over Fazalhaq Farooqi. He hit three sixes and one four in the 20th over and stayed unbeaten on 30 off 8 balls. Faf du Plessis carried his bat through scoring 73 runs off 50 deliveries. He hit 8 fours and 2 sixes during his stay in the middle. The late flourish by Karthik helped Bangalore to a total of 192 runs for the loss of three wickets in their 20 overs. Jagadeesha Suchith was the pick of the bowlers for Hyderabad picking up two wickets for 30 runs from his four overs.

Hyderabad’s start to the chase was a miserable one as they lost two wickets in the very first over. Notably, Kane Williamson went back for a diamond duck as he was run out without facing a single delivery. After the end of the first over Hyderabad was 1 for two down and was in trouble. Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram stabilized the innings laying the foundation for the chase. They stitched a partnership of 50 runs off 45 deliveries before Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed Markram (21 of 27) in the ninth over.  The pitch kept getting slower and the Hyderabad batters apart from Rahul Tripathi were finding it difficult to middle the ball. Wickets kept tumbling as the scoreboard pressure kept mounting but Hyderbad’s hopes were still afloat as long as Tripathi was batting the way he was. Meanwhile, the man in form Nicholas Pooran (19 of 14) could not impact the chase as he was dismissed by Hasaranga in the 13th over.

After the end of the 15th over Hyderabad was 111 for 5 requiring 82 runs from 30 balls. With the required rate rising the pressure of scoring quickly got the better of Rahul Tripathi. He was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood in the 16th over after he scored 58 runs off 37 deliveries, hitting six fours and two sixes. His dismissal was the final nail in the coffin for Hyderabad as the remaining equation was too much for the quality of batting left for the Men in Orange. Hyderabad ultimately managed to score 125 and lost the match by 67 runs. The pick of the bowlers for Bangalore was Wanindu Hasaranga, who picked up five wickets for 18 runs in his four overs. Josh Hazlewood was also great with the ball picking up two wickets for 10 runs from his 3 overs. It was the fourth consecutive defeat for Kane Williamson’s team and the sixth in total. While Bangalore won their 7th match in 13 outings and strengthened their claim to the top four.
