World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed that he has very low expectations from himself heading into the 2023 Indian Wells Masters due to injury concerns. Tsitsipas started the year on a high note as he reached the finals of the Australian Open, where he lost against Novak Djokovic. However, after leaving Melbourne he revealed that he was suffering from a shoulder injury.

Things haven’t been great for Tsitsipas since then as he suffered a second-round exit at the ABN Amro Open. and also had to pull out of Acapulco. It seems that injury has been affecting his performance and that’s the reason he kept his expectations low for the upcoming championship.

“I am still in recovery and I won’t be pretending … that I have chances of doing well in these next two tournaments, because that would be wrong. I haven’t said it a lot of times in my career but I don’t think I will be capable of going deep,” said Tsitsipas in a press conference on Wednesday.

The Greek player has also cleared that his main priority is to get himself fully fit and be ready for the clay court which also hints that he will not put any real effort into the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

“The main priority is getting my body ready and fixed for the clay court swing,” he added.

I need to take my time and have the right medical team: Tsitsipas

The 24-year-old also feels that it would be good if he takes time and wait for his body to recover to the fullest instead of complicating things in a hurry.

“I need to take my time and have the right medical team by my side to help me recover to the fullest and not have complications like this in the future,” he further added.

Tsitsipas will start his Indian Wells campaign on Friday against Australia’s Jordan Thompson with a Round of 64 fixture. He could have withdrawn from the tournament considering the injury issue he is going through, but Tsitsipas disclosed that he made a deal with himself that he will skip the upcoming two events.

“I made a deal with myself that I will not be skipping the next two events,” Tsitsipas stated.
