‘Double century miss hogayi’ – Fans react as Dean Elgar departs after scoring 185 runs in 1st Test against India
The South African opening batter Dean Elgar played one of the finest knocks in the first innings of the first match of his farewell Test series against India in Centurion on India’s tour of South Africa. Elgar scored 185 runs off 287 balls as he stood tall for two days and let the South African squad to a good score with a strike rate of 64.46.
Elgar smashed 28 boundaries throughout the innings and missed a deserved double-century by 15 runs as he was caught by KL Rahul behind the stumps on the delivery of Shardul Thakur. Before Day 3 of the 1st Test match, Elgar got candid and talked about his mindset while playing test cricket and the importance of defending and leaving the unplayable deliveries.
Dean Elgar on his mindset while playing his farewell test series against India
“I don’t think I wanted to prove any point. Just that I wanted to go out with a bang as that is the standard I set for myself as there’s no looking back now. It was quite a good wicket to bat on. Had there been more sun, it would have been tougher. It’s just that it’s been my way. Could have been another batter another day,” Elgar told NDTV Sports.
“Your mindset has to be looking to score but also defending and leaving balls. There’s one ball with your name on it jags back. When you look to score, you are in a better position to make good decisions, capitalized on balls that are over-pitched,” he added.
“Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate. Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have,” Elgar said.
