Arsenal reclaimed first place in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory against London rivals Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Two teams coming with a long winless run were keen to get a game their way. However, the visitors’ poor first-half performance allowed the Gunners to surge into a three-goal lead at the break, with Martin Odegaard scoring twice inside the first 31 minutes before Gabriel Jesus struck a third from a short distance.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a surprise start against his former club but was substituted at halftime after only touching the ball nine times. Chelsea improved significantly after the break with Kai Havertz leading the line instead. Noni Madueke scored his first goal for Chelsea in 65 minutes, a sloppy finish from Mateo Kovacic’s through-ball, but the damage had already been done as Arsenal claimed their first win in five games.

This is Chelsea’s sixth consecutive loss in the ongoing season with nine winless games. In his last 20 matches as a manager, Frank Lampard has lost 17 games, while having two draws and a win. This is Chelsea’s poorest run in the last three decades and the team is currently 12th placed in the ongoing Premier League. However, this win has given Arsenal a two points lead over Pep Guardiola’s side, despite having played two more games, lifted the spirit around the club after a four-game winless streak and ensured the title chase remained alive despite events at the Etihad Stadium last week.

“We are underperforming basics,” says Lampard after the game

After the humiliating defeat, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard backed his players but also admitted that they were doing basics wrong. He said, “The first half performance was not good enough, in every way. We were nice to play against in every way, nice off the ball, passive. Things we spoke about before the game defensively we didn’t do. We’ve got to do the basics a bit better.”

“I know the casual answer to the first half can be the players didn’t have pride or didn’t care enough; the players certainly do. I’m not questioning the players as lads. From being good lads to transferring it onto the pitch. There are some things you go ‘Fine, we need to get better at that’. there are some things that you go ‘Lads, they are the basics and they have to be better’. I spoke a lot about confidence. The team is low on confidence but it’s also underperforming in the basics”, he further added.
