FIFA World Cup 2022: Day Six – Iran snatches victory from Wales, Senegal annihilates Qatar
On Day six of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, four games were played on the day. First up, one of the top teams from Europe, Wales faced one of the rising teams from Asia, Iran. After this, the Western African outfit, Senegal met the hosts. The third game was played between the Netherlands and the Southern American side, Ecuador. The last game was played between England and the United States.
Match Number 1 – Wales vs Iran
Notably, in terms of ranking, both teams are ranked next to each other. Wales is ranked 19th while Iran is 20th. However, the European side, despite having the ball possession for most parts (62%), lost the game. More importantly, the Asian outfit scored two goals in the injury which can be easily termed as ‘Salt in the wounds’. The likes of Roozbeh Cheshmi (90+8′) and Ramin Rezaeian (90+11′) scored to create history for their side. Now, Iran needs to win their last group game against the United States on November 29 to reach the round of 16.
Match Number 2 – Qatar vs Senegal
The second game of the day was a must-win for both teams. They were coming off losses in the opening games. However, the Western African team annihilates the hosts. Senegal was leading at half-time thanks to a strike from Boulaye Dia (41′). Three minutes into the second half, Famara Diedhiou further piled the misery of the home team.
For Qatar, Mohammed Muntari opened the scoring in the 78th minute. At this stage, they had the opportunity to score an equalizer but it vanished after Bamba Dieng from Senegal scored six minutes later. The world number 18, Senegal won by 3-1.
Match Number 3 – Netherlands vs Ecuador
The Three-time finalists, Dutch played against Ecuador and both teams were coming off wins. The European side had a great start as Cody Gapko scored in only the sixth minute of the game. However, Enner Valenica, the hero of the game against Qatar, scored the equalizer in the 49th minute. The game ended in 1-1 draw.
Match Number 4 – England vs USA
The last game of the day ended in a goalless draw. However, the 1966 winners, England were dominated by the US. However, the world number 16 side, the US, failed to get past the former champions.
