Fifa World Cup 2022 to start a day earlier; here’s all you need to know
In what has come as a good piece of news for football fans, the FIFA World Cup 2022 is expected to be held a day earlier, prior to the scheduled start of the tournament. Only a few months are left before the tournament begins and the organizing committee is now planning to start it a day earlier than the scheduled date. For the unversed, the tournament was all set to kick off on 21st November 2022.
The first day of the event would have Senegal vs Netherlands and England vs Iran games taking place. The opening ceremony would have been staged the next day ahead of the host nation’s group stage encounter. However, it has now been reported that the tournament is likely to be conducted on 20th November. The changes are being made in a bid to conduct the opening ceremony and host nation’s first match on the first day itself, i.e., 20th November 2022.
“The plan has to be voted on by the heads of FIFA’s six regional confederations and president Gianni Infantino but, despite the late notice, is expected to win support,” said the Reuters report.
If the tournament begins a day earlier, then it will allow Senegal vs Netherlands match, scheduled at 1 PM local time, on November 21, to kick off later in the day.
Besides, the group B game on the same day, including USA vs Wales, won’t be affected as well. The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world. Besides, it will be the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
The tournament will be last one for some of the veteran footballers such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo etc. They would be keen to put in their best performance and help their nation win the trophy.
