India and Sri Lanka are currently locking horns for the 33rd match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first in the hope of dismissing the Indian batting lineup for a low number of runs to get a decent target to chase in the second innings. Sri Lanka began to execute their plans successfully as they dismissed the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.

Rohit got out at just the second delivery of the first over as he went back to the dugout after scoring four runs on two balls. India’s legendary batsman Virat Kohli and star batter Shubman Gill made a humongous partnership which later became a dealbreaker for Sri Lanka as both the batters almost scored a century each and got dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli both missed well-deserved centuries by eight and 12 runs respectively as they scored 92 and 88 runs off 92 and 94 deliveries with a strike rate of 100 and 93.62 after hitting 11 fours respectively. India’s middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer later carried forward the innings and scored 82 runs off 56 deliveries as he hit 3 fours and 6 sixes.

Shreyas Iyer on Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill laying a foundation for India against Sri Lanka

“I think it was a pretty good wicket to bat, the ball was coming on and there was some nice bounce. I could settle for a while and then play my shots. It was magnificent to watch (the partnership between Gill and Kohli), and the way they took the singles, twos and the boundaries, they laid the platform for us. We were told that the oddball was stopping and holding a bit, so it was a good partnership that they had and it helped us later on”, said Shreyas Iyer in the innings break as India gave a huge target for Sri Lanka to chase.
