‘Bade khatarnak log hai yaar’ – Fans praise India as they thrash Sri Lanka by record 302 runs in ODI World Cup 2023

In the 33rd game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, India and Sri Lanka locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Notably, for the first time after the 2011 WC final, both teams played an ODI game at this venue. Ahead of the game, the home side was coming off six wins on the trot. On the other hand, the 1996 winners needed a win to keep themselves alive.

Meanwhile, in this game, the Lankan Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first. Apart from the second-ball wicket of skipper Rohit Sharma (4) by Dilshan Madushanka, not much happened for the 96 winners. At 4/1, the likes of former skipper Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill put together 189 runs for the second wicket in just 29.4 overs. Both batters missed out on their respective hundreds.

After their wickets, the likes of KL Rahul (21) and Shreyas Iyer (82) kept scoring at a good pace with 60 runs in just 7.5 overs. In the end, Ravindra Jadeja got 35 off 24 balls including a six and a four, and helped the team reach 357/8. For the Lions, Madushanka took a five-wicket haul while others failed.

India reminds Sri Lanka of the Asia Cup 2023 final

In reply, the Lankan side went through a recap of the Asia Cup 2023 final, played two months back. In that game, the then-Dasun Shanaka-led side won the toss and elected to bat first. This decision proved to be a disaster with Mohammed Siraj taking six wickets and bowling out the opposition for 50 runs. Meanwhile, once again, the Lankan Lions once again lived through the same nightmare.

From the first ball, the team was in trouble and never in the chase. Jasprit Bumrah took the first wicket of the innings to start the second innings. After him, Siraj became the nightmare of the Lions once again as he took three wickets. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami took his second five-wicket haul of the ongoing tournament. In the end, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 55 runs, losing the game by 302 runs.
