Five dark secrets of the Indian T20 league
3) Lack of opportunities
The main motto of the Indian T20 league is “Where talent meets opportunity”. Although the toughest 20 has seen several young talents emerge, and go on to rule the cricketing world, there are some exceptions as well. In an attempt to commercialize the game, there have been a few casualties in the form of the lack of development of some youngsters.
Ricky Bhui, who happens to be a fine talent from Andhra Pradesh, played just five games in four seasons for Hyderabad. Baba Aparjith couldn’t even get a game for Chennai, despite being a U19 World Cup winner. They might have got paid, but they never got the deserved opportunities.
4) Fixing
Match-Fixing has been one of the biggest obstacles towards the reputation of the league. The 2013 fixing incident took the world by storm, and dented the league’s images forever. S Sreesanth, Chavan and Ajit Chandila were barred from playing all forms of cricket after their alleged involvement in match-fixing.
Due to this, several close games and last-ball thrillers were claimed to be “fixed”. Besides, playing with the emotions of the fans is always costly. Even today, several people claim that fixing still exists in the league.
