Mumbai took on Punjab in the 23rd match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Mumbai was searching for their first victory in the tournament after four straight defeats to start the campaign. Punjab on the other hand was looking to get back to winning ways after a shock defeat in their last match against Gujarat.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to field first. Punjab had a lightning start to their innings. The skipper of the team, Mayank Agrawal found back his form and scored 52 runs off 32 deliveries hitting 2 sixes and 6 fours during his stay. Agarwal put up a partnership of 92 runs with Shikhar Dhawan for the first wicket within 10 overs. Murugan Ashwin picked up the first wicket of the innings as he dismissed the Punjab skipper. Shikhar Dhawan continued steadily at the other end. He was the fourth wicket to fall for Punjab in the 17th over when the team’s score was 151 runs. Dhawan was dismissed by Basil Thampi after he scored 70 runs off 50 deliveries hitting 3 sixes and 5 fours.

With the help of a brilliant cameo by Jitesh Sharma (30 off 15 deliveries) and a late flourish from Shahrukh Khan (15 off 6), Punjab posted a big total of 198 runs in their 20 overs. Basil Thampi picked up 2 wickets for Mumbai, however, he conceded 47 runs from his 4 overs.

Mumbai had a big task on their hands and they began their chase on the wrong note. They lost both their openers within the first five overs for a score of just 32 runs. But after that, the two youngsters in Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma staged a dramatic turnaround for the men in blue. They stitched an 84 runs partnership in just 41 balls. Dewald Brevis slammed Rahul Chahar for 4 consecutive sixes in the 9th over and picked up 29 runs in total from the over. That over changed the momentum in Mumbai’s favor. Brevis was dismissed in the 11th over of the innings after he played a brilliant knock of 49 runs from 25 deliveries. He hit 5 sixes and 4 fours. With this knock, he stood up to his reputation of being called ‘Baby AB’. After his dismissal, Tilak Varma (36 off 20) was, unfortunately, run out in the 13th over and the game was in balance again. After the end of the 15th over of the innings Mumbai was 146 for 4 down with Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard at the crease. Yadav looked set at 20 off 16 deliveries and Pollard was trying to adjust himself to the conditions. With 5 wickets in hand the equation of 53 runs from 30 deliveries looked achievable for Mumbai.

But Punjab came back in the match as they picked up the big wicket of Kieron Pollard courtesy of another unfortunate run out. Pollard was dismissed in the 17th over of the innings with Mumbai still needing 47 runs off 23 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav was the last hope for Mumbai to pick up their first win in the tournament. But Kagiso Rabada  picked up his wicket in the 19th over and sealed the deal for Punjab. Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a brilliantly played 43 runs off 30 deliveries. Mumbai finished with a score of 186 for 9 and lost the match by 12  runs . The men in blue faced their 5th straight defeat of the tournament, while Punjab won their 3rd in 5 matches.
