French Open 2023: Emma Navarro and Patrick Kypson to enter as Wildcards
Emma Navarro and Patrick Kypson have received the reciprocal wild cards for the 2023 French Open. For the first time in their respective careers, both players received direct entrance into the singles main draw of the Grand Slams. An agreement between the USTA and the French Tennis Federation (FFT) states that one male and one female player from each nation will get a wild card entry into the Grand Slam main draw of the other nation.
The USTA runs a wild card challenge to choose its wild card for the French Open. The challenge is based on American players’ performance in the sequence of clay court professional events preceding the Clay Major. Emma Navarro and Patrick Kypson are the players that placed first on the men’s and women’s lists for that challenge this year.
Seven women and seven men will each earn straight enrollment into the singles main draw at the French Open 2023
During the five-week challenge period, Navarro, who won the NCAA Division 1 women’s singles championship in 2021, finished 14-3. She won ITF championships in Charleston and Charlottesville, raising her WTA ranking to its best point ever. The 21-year-old, who is ranked 83rd in the world, will now make her Roland Garros debut. On the final women’s standings of the Challenge, she placed ahead of Kayla Day (World No. 137) and Caroline Dolehide (World No. 112).
This year at Roland Garros, Patrick Kypson will also make his debut. Tristan Boyer (World No. 863) and Mitchell Krueger (World No. 269) came in second and third, respectively, in the final men’s rankings. The 23-year-old, who is rated 378 in the world, recently advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Challenger events in Savannah and San Luis Potosi.
Seven women and seven men will each earn straight enrollment into the singles main draw at the 2023 French Open due to their protected rankings after returning to the sport after childbirth injury.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (PR 21), who finished second in the women’s draw in 2021, and Elina Svitolina (PR 27), who has advanced to the quarterfinals three times, will play in the singles competition as a result of the provision. Jennifer Brady (PR 14), Daria Saville (PR 54), Patricia Maria Tig (PR 65), Sara Sorribes Tormo (PR 68), and Kristina Kucova (PR 90) are more ladies who will benefit.
