The 55th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 saw Chennai take the field against Delhi at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The fans witnessed a completely one-sided affair as Chennai crushed Delhi and won the match comprehensively.

Delhi won the toss and put Chennai to bat. The openers gave the Men in Yellow a perfect start. It was Devon Conway who was attacking the bowlers from the very beginning. At the other end, Ruturaj Gaikwad was playing a steady knock rotating the strike. The duo brought up the team’s 50 in the sixth over. By the end of the powerplays, they were placed strongly at 57 without loss. The attack from the southpaw continued even after the field was spread. He was particularly brutal against Kuldeep Yadav. The century partnership also came up in the process. However, Ruturaj (41 of 33) was dismissed in the 11th over by Anrich Nortje. Gaikwad’s dismissal  at 110 in the 11th over led to the loss of momentum for Chennai as the new man Dube looked to settle down. Conway  lost his patience not being able to dominate strike and thus perished in the 17th over. He scored a brilliant 87 of 49 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes.

Just when it was looking like Chennai might fall short of what they could have achieved, the momentum was regained by Dhoni and Dube. MS Dhoni (21 of 8) and Shivam Dube (32 of 19) ensured Chennai reach a mammoth total of 208 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs.

Delhi had a blazing start to their innings. Even though they lost two wickets in the powerplay, the batters ensured that the momentum stayed with them. One of the two wickets to fall within the powerplay was that of the man in for David Warner. He missed out on an opportunity to go big and was dismissed at a score of  19 of 12 balls. The team’s score during Warner’s dismissal was 36 for 2 from 4.2 overs. Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant took over at this stage and began an onslaught that kept Delhi in the game. They stitched a partnership of 36 runs before Marsh (25 of 20) was dismissed by Moeen Ali in the 8th over of the innings. The string of wickets continued after this. It was Moeen Ali who shifted the balance of the match in Chennai’s favor by picking up Rishabh Pant (21 of 11) in the 10th over. He followed it up with Ripal Patel’s wicket (6 of 3) in the same over. Mukehsh Choudhary kept up the good work as he cleaned up Axar Patel (1 of 3) in the very next over. Delhi’s hopes were slowly sinking and everything at this stage dependent on Rovman Powell.

But Mukesh Choudhary made sure that Chennai’s grip on the match is not loosened. He dismissed Powell in the the 11th over itself and the match was nearly over for Delhi. The spell of play from the 7th-11th over of the innings saw Delhi loose 5 wickets for 11 runs. This derailed Delhi completely and they failed to make a comeback.  However Shardul Tahkur fought hard till the end scoring 24 of 19 deliveries, but it was too late. Delhi was bundled for 117 in the  18th over and they lost the match by 91 runs . With the heavy defeat the chances of Delhi making it to the top four has gone bleak. The pick of the bowlers for Chennai was Moeen Ali, who picked up 3 wickets for 14 runs from his 4 overs. It was Chennai’s fourth win in 11 matches, while Delhi lost their sixth in 11 matches.
