Gautam Gambhir did not mince his words for Babar Azam, calls him ‘selfish’
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and his side is getting severely criticized after losing their Super 12 game against Zimbabwe. The 2009 winners were expected to win this must-win game. However, while chasing 130-odd runs, the Babar Azam-led side fell short by one run. After this, the former champions are on the verge of getting eliminated even after winning against the Netherlands.
Since losing to Zimbabwe, the Green Brigade including Azam has been criticized for their batting approach. Former players such as Wasim Akram, Shoaib Malik, etc have been pointing out Azam’s poor strike rate in the shortest format. Now, former India opening batter and 2007 winner, Gautam Gambhir has called Azam a ‘selfish’ player. The former said that it is important for Azam to keep his side first before himself.
“In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish. It is easy for Babar and Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan and create so many records. If you want to be a leader, you have to think about your team”, he said.
Pakistan’s semis hopes are hanging by thread
Even after winning against the Dutch, the Green Brigade’s chances of qualifying for the semis. After all, their hopes of qualifying are dependent on other teams. India’s loss to South Africa has dented Pakistan’s chances. Now, they need India and South Africa to lose at least one of their games. However, India will play Zimbabwe and Bangladesh while the Proteas will play against the Netherlands and Pakistan. It will be extremely tough for Pakistan to beat South Africa.
