Gautam Gambhir names two players who can lead India in future
Since India’s loss in the semis of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the team’s captaincy came under question. Apparently, the fans and experts of the game aren’t happy with the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in the shortest format. They feel that he is too defensive and doesn’t fit in the team as a player. Also, not to forget, the Indian Cricket Board is reportedly contemplating a change in captaincy in T20Is
At a time when a lot of former players are suggesting their candidates, Gautam Gambhir has named two. According to him, the likes of Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw can be the best candidates. Notably, the former led the team on a few occasions this year while Shaw continues to get ignored by the Indian Cricket Board selectors.
“Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport”, expressed Gautam Gambhir as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo at a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) event in New Delhi.
“Hardik Pandya obviously is in line,” Gambhir said. “But that’s going to be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in only one World Event event is not the right way to probably judge him,” opined Gambhir.
I know people talk about Prithvi Shaw’s off-the field-activities: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir also pointed out off-the-field issues Shaw had during the conversation. Apparently, the latter was punished for doping violations in 2019. Also, in March this year, the 2018 U19 World Cup-winning skipper failed the Yo-yo Test. Meanwhile, Gambhir said that it id the job of selectors and coaches to take the players to the right path.
“I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that is what the job of the coach and the selectors is,” Gambhir said. “The selectors’ job is not just to pick the 15, but also to get people walk the right path.”
