Glenn Phillips becomes first New Zealand spinner to take 5-wickets haul in Test match after 16 years
On Saturday Glenn Phillips of New Zealand became the first New Zealand spinner to take a 5-wicket haul in the Test at home in 16 years. Glenn Philips achieved this landmark in the first Test match against Australia in Basin Reserve at Wellington. New Zealand legendary spinner Daniel Vettori was the last player for New Zealand to pick the 5-wicket haul in 2008 against West Indies in University Oval at Dunedin.
In the ongoing Test match between New Zealand and Australia on Day 2 Glenn Phillips ended up by taking 5 wickets while giving away 16 runs. Australia started Day 3 on 13 runs for two losses as Glenn Phillips came into the bowling attack as the fifth bowler for New Zealand. He dismissed opener Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Travis Head Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey as Australia was all down at a score of 164 runs in the second innings. He ended up bowling 16 overs giving 45 runs and picked 5 wickets.
Australia dominates New Zealand
This is Glenn Phillips’ best bowling figure in first-class cricket for New Zealand. Earlier he picked 2 four-wicket hauls. Last year on the Bangladesh tour Glenn Phillips showed his master class with the ball. He ended up the with 3rd highest wicket-taker in the two-match Test series. He picked 8 wickets which included one four-wicket haul. Glenn Phillips also had a good run for New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup as New Zealand finished as a semi-finalist.
In the ongoing Test match, New Zealand have a big task ahead of them to win the Test match. They need to chase down the target of 369 runs. Australia has the upper hand in the Test match as New Zealand are.
