‘Golden period of hockey is ahead’ – Fans react as Indian hockey team win gold medal in Asian Games 2023

The Indian hockey team has successfully sealed one more Laurel for the country as they have brought in a gold medal for India by defeating Japan in the final match of the men’s hockey event of the 19th edition of the Asian games, which is being conducted in Hangzhou, China. The Indian hockey team beat Japan by 5-1 in the game. 

At the beginning of the match, India scored the first goal in the second quarter in the 25th minute of the game, as Manpreet Singh led the team towards the first lead. In just the beginning of the third quarter, Harmanpreet Singh led India towards the second goal. Amit Rohidas scored the third goal, followed by Abhishek’s fourth goal in the 52nd minute of the game. 

Japan scored their first goal in the 54th minute of the game, but Harmanpreet Singh led the Indian hockey team towards the fifth and final goal by finishing the game and style and leading the team towards the gold medal. 

India shining bright in the men’s hockey event 

This is the first time in 40 years of the sport that India holds a medal in the men’s hockey event in all three major tournaments, the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. This is a major proud moment for the country as India ended their 41-year-old drought in the Olympics after winning a medal for their national sport. 

Previously, the Indian hockey team won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by beating Germany by 5-4. India also won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games, in 2022. 

“I think the most important thing I have learnt from my life is not to dwell too much – either on happiness or sadness. The most important thing is how quickly you are coming back, and how quickly can you switch back the focus. We are the No. 1 team in Asia and that is how we should play”, said Harmanpreet Singh.
