Heavy rains in Colombo can put venue out of hosting Asia Cup 2023 matches
It is rainy season in Sri Lanka now, which is risking the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. The match between India and Pakistan had no result due to the interruption of rain. Meanwhile, there is heavy rain in Colombo, which is one of the key venues of the tournament. The forecast in Colombo for the upcoming days is not encouraging either.
According to the initial schedule, Colombo is set to host six matches in total, including the big final. But the Asian cricket board might have to find an alternate quickly, as having matches at the venue in the upcoming days might be impossible given the forecast. According to the reports, the matches from Colombo are set to be moved to other venues after criticism from various boards.
The former chairman of Pakistan cricket board, Najam Sethi, criticized the Asian cricket board for not listening to his advice of hosting the tournament in the UAE. The reports also suggested that Dambulla was proposed as one of the venues for the tournament by the Sri Lankan cricket board but was not picked. Colombo and Kandy were chosen to host the matches following the hybrid model suggestion.
Not so promising weather for the India vs Nepal Asia Cup 2023 clash
The Indian cricket board had refused to travel to Pakistan due to security reasons, which forced the hybrid model to exist. Dambulla is considered as a comparatively drier region than the other Sri Lankan regions. The Sri Lankan cricket board was confident of hosting the matches in Colombo. But given the weather conditions, it might not be the case now.
The Asian cricket board can breathe easy a bit for the upcoming matches, as Lahore has a clear weather for the upcoming days. Four of the next three matches are set to happen at the venue. But most of the other matches after that are to be played in Colombo, which has turned out to be a headache for the board. There are 84 percent chances that the Asia Cup 2023 clash between India and Nepal might be affected due to rain.
