India’s star batsman Shubman Gill is expected to miss the team’s highly anticipated Match against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup, 2023 due to dengue. Multiple reports were surfacing on the internet that Shubman Gill had been diagnosed with dengue and was experiencing a slow recovery.

However, it was reported that last night Shubman Gill was admitted to the hospital due to a low platelet count. Shubman Gill has missed India’s game against Australia and has been ruled out of the Afghanistan match as well which will be held on 11 October.

India will play their next match against Pakistan on 14 October, at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. India might call Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad for backup, in case Shubman Gill fails to recover in time.

Shubman Gill is recovering and back in hotel: Sources

“Gill’s platelet count dropped below 1,00,000 and he was hospitalised a day before – October 8 – for observation purposes. Nothing alarming there as he is already back in the hotel on October 9 and continues to receive treatment there. Ever since he has landed in Chennai, all his treatment – from a regular dose of glucose and other procedures – has been happening in the hotel only,” a source told CricketNext.

“Travel to Delhi would have meant consulting a new facility and doctor in Delhi. The management didn’t want that to happen and kept him back in Chennai to avoid any needless travel too. He is expected to join the team only when clearance comes from the doctor. Right now, he is under constant watch of the Indian cricket board medical team and the doctors in Chennai, who have been treating him ever since he came to Chennai,” he said.

“Gill’s vital signs are improving and he is on the right path of recovery – 70-80% recovered. Difficult to say when he will return but things are looking good,” added the source.

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team”, said Jay Shah, Secretary of the Indian Cricket Board.
