Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has said that he will play his last IPL game in Chennai. Dhoni led CSK to their fourth title in the IPL 2021 after which many speculated that MS Dhoni might draw curtains on his career. Dhoni himself had said that he is not sure if CSK will retain him for the next season owing to the new retention policy. However, the veteran has hinted at playing another season.
“I have always planned my cricket. My last game that I played was in Ranchi, the ODI version my last game was at my home town in Ranchi. So hopefully my last T20, it will be in Chennai. Whether its next year or in five years time, we don’t really know,” Dhoni said even as the people attending the event clapped in unison after his last statement.
Dhoni’s form with the bat has not been that great. However, he still has one of the sharpest brains in cricket. There were reports that Dhoni might not play the IPL 2022 but become the mentor of the team. When quizzed about his plans with the franchise, Dhoni remained tightlipped and said he has still not taken a call as there is plenty of time left for the T20 extravaganza. “I will think about it, there is a lot of time, right now we are just in November. IPL 2022 will be played in April,” Dhoni said.
He added that he does not want the franchise to suffer because of him and want to create a strong core for the team. “Again I’ve said it before, it depends on BCCI. With two new teams coming in, we have to decide what is good for CSK. It’s not about me being there in top-three or four. It’s about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn’t suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” Dhoni told broadcaster Star Sports at the post-match conference.
