The last match of the Super Fours stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 was played between India and Bangladesh at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, September 15. India suffered a shocking 6-run loss ahead of the final match against Sri Lanka on September 17.

Talking about the match, India opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision proved right as their pace bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur were brilliant in the powerplay from the very start. With their impeccable line and length, they consistently posed challenging questions to the Bangladeshi batters, making the ball move around beautifully.

The Bangladeshi top-order found themselves in a troubling situation, seemingly caught off guard, as they stumbled to a horrible scorecard of 59/4. However, just when things looked bleak for Bangladesh, it was their vintage star player, Shakib Al Hasan, who emerged as their saviour. Supported ably by Towhid Hridoy, Shakib showcased his class and experience, anchoring the innings with a determined effort.

As the Bangladeshi skipper inched closer to a century, hopes were high, but Shardul Thakur had other plans, dismissing him at a crucial juncture. Shakib departed after scoring 80 runs which included 6 fours and 3 sixes. Nevertheless, the lower order chipped in admirably, with Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan making valuable contributions. Thanks to their efforts, Bangladesh managed to cross the 250-run mark. Thakur picked 3 wickets while Shami managed to take 2 wickets.

Shbuman Gill’s century went in vain

Chasing the target, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, a 20-year-old newcomer from Bangladesh, shocked the Indian team by ejecting Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma during the first powerplay. But later, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul stabilised the situation and put together a 57-run partnership for the third wicket.

But as Indian hitters began to lose wickets frequently, Bangladesh’s spinners began to cause problems for them. Gill managed to keep one end secure but did not receive assistance from the other. The opening batsman, who is right-handed, scored a superb century and helped the team come closer to the target.

However, he departed after scoring 121 runs at the crucial stage of the match. Axar Patel tried his best to take the team to the win but Bangladeshi bowlers were not giving him many loose balls to hit as he fell just before finishing the match resulting in India’s 6-run loss.
