The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings squared up against each other in the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 on Sunday. SRH won the toss and chose to bowl first and the decision worked wonders for them. PBKS did not get off to a good start as Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed for a first ball duck.

Matthew Short and Jitesh Sharma were Marco Jansen’s two victims with the ball. The PBKS batters struggled to put bat to ball on this pitch. Sam Curran looked positive and took the attack to SRH as he made 22 off 15 balls with three fours and one six. But he was dismissed by Mayank Markande, who was the man with the golden arm for SRH.

The wrist spinner picked up 4-15 in his four overs in his debut game for the Orange Army. When Curran departed, there was a mini collapse as Sikandar Raza, Shahrukh Khan and Harpreet Brar all got out in quick succession.

Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram stitched an unbeaten 100-run stand to take SRH home

Rahul Chahar and Nathan Ellis did not hang around for much long either. Shikhar Dhawan pulled out his magic wand and batted right through the PBKS innings. The left-hander scored 99 off 66 balls with 12 fours and five sixes. He allied with Mohit Rathee for the last wicket as they duo stitched together an unbeaten 55 run partnership, which is the fifth highest in men’s T20 cricket.

In the second innings, Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal opened for SRH. Brook scored 13 off 14 balls with three fours, while Agarwal made 21 off 20 with three fours but neither of them got going. At 45-2 after 8.3 overs, the match could have gone either way. But Rahul Tripathi had other plans. The Maharashtrian struck an unbeaten 74 off 48 balls with 10 fours and three sixes to get SRH back into the contest. He also remained unbeaten and won the match for his team.

Tripathi received good support from SRH skipper Aiden Markram, who made an unbeaten 37 off 21 balls with six fours. The duo stitched a 100-run stand to ensure that there would be no hiccups during the chase. Tripathi hit the winning shot for SRH and helped the team register its first win in IPL 2023.
