Pakistan have been on a rampage in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup. The Babar Azam-led team is the only unbeaten side in the competition, winning five games. Although Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan have managed to grab the majority of the limelight, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been instrumental in the team’s success, displaying calmness and composure under pressure.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was effusive in praise of Azam’s leadership and lauded his inspirational and calculative attitude. Pakistan will next face Australia in the semifinal on Thursday (November 11).

“Pakistan have always been a mercurial side with some of the most naturally talented cricketers in the game. What has pulled them back is an excitable temperament,” Gavaskar wrote in a Khaleej Times column.

“This time with Babar Azam leading them they are a lot calmer and a lot more game aware team. There is no doubt that Babar if he keeps himself fit and motivated is going to become one of the all-time greats of the game. What he can become is also one of the greatest captains that Pakistan has produced.”

Gavaskar further opined that Azam has been able to make the right field placements and has used his bowlers smartly. He also feels the Pakistan skipper reads the game well. “His reading of the game situation is brilliant and the changes that he has been making with the bowling and field placing have been unbelievably accurate.”
