‘I’m not fully fit after dengue’ – Shubman Gill’s shocking revelation after missing century against Sri Lanka in ODI World Cup 2023

India’s star opening batsman Shubman Gill recently opened up in the post ceremony of the game against Sri Lanka for the first time after being diagnosed and recovered from dengue. India beat Sri Lanka by 302 runs on 2 November at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as the Indian bowlers dismissed the Sri Lankan batting lineup for 55 runs.

Shubman Gill became the highest scorer for the team as he scored 92 runs off 92 balls after hitting 11 fours and two sixes. Notably, Gill missed a well-deserved century by eight runs but received wide appreciation for playing a stunning knock after recovering from dengue. In the ceremony, Gill said that he hasn’t fully recovered and has lost four kgs after recovering from dengue.

“Not in full fitness. I am four kilos down from dengue in terms of mass and muscle weight. The odd ball was seaming and I hit the balls in my areas. You couldn’t get into a shell. I looked to put pressure on the bowlers. I felt in the previous matches I got starts except the last one. We thought about rotating the strike today. I honestly don’t think it was a 400 wicket. We batted well to get 350,” said Shubman Gill during the post-match ceremony.

Rohit Sharma on India’s qualifying for the semifinals of ODI World Cup 2023

“Very happy knowing that we have officially qualified now. Been a good effort from the squad, when we started off in Chennai. This was our goal, to qualify first and then obviously to be in the semis and the finals. The way we approached these 7 games, was quite clinical. Everyone put in the effort and a lot of individuals have put their hand up,” said Rohit Sharma in the post-match ceremony.

“Was a good challenge to put runs on the board, and that’s the kind of template you gotta have when you want to score that many runs. 350 on any pitch is a very good score and a lot of credit to the batting unit for taking us to that score and the bowlers did the job obviously”, he said.

“Shreyas is a very strong (in his mind) lad and today, as you saw, he went there and did what he is exactly known for and that is what we expect from him. Showed that he is ready to take the challenge that is in front of him”, he added.
