‘I’m saying that it can happen’: Virender Sehwag on Chennai’s chances of making it to the top four

MS Dhoni has been leading the Chennai franchise since the inception of the Indian T20 League in 2008. The Men in Yellow emerged as the most consistent team in the history of the tournament under the leadership of ‘Captain Cool’. He led Chennai to 4 ITL titles in 9 finals.
But just ahead of the 15th edition of the tournament Dhoni decided to step down from the role and hand over the responsibilities to Ravindra Jadeja. Under Jadeja’s leadership, Chennai was having a terrible time in ITL 2022. Of the first eight matches that they played in the tournament, they have lost six and their chances of making it to the top four are hanging by a thread.
Unable to concentrate properly on his own game Jadeja relinquished the captaincy of the team and handed back the reins to MS Dhoni ahead of Chennai’s match against Hyderabad. With Dhoni’s return to the role, Chennai also looked like a different team. They outplayed Hyderabad in the match and won the contest by 13 runs. But the slump that they went through at the start of the season has left them in a position where they will have to win all the six of their remaining matches in order to have any chance of making it to the top four.
While not many fans and cricket experts are not placing their bets on Chennai to make it to the top four, Virender Sehwag has stood in a different queue. In a recent conversation with Cricbuzz Sehwag has said that he feels under MS Dhoni, Chennai can win the next matches and still make it to the play-offs of the Indian T20 League 2022.
“I have been with that man since 2005 and I have seen Indian cricket change under him’-said Sehwag. He also spoke about India’s win in the Commonwealth Bank series in Australia under Dhoni’s leadership. He said that it was a feat that the team never thought of achieving and how after that India started to glorify their name on the world map of the game.
“After that, we won several International knockouts, home series under him, the ones which we used to lose before but they turned into victories. So keeping that in mind, I am saying that it can happen (Chennai playing the playoffs),”- Sehwag added further.
