In their second Super 4 game, Rohit Sharma-led India faced defending champions Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bat first. His decision went well with the team, as India added 80 runs for the first wicket.

In this partnership, Rohit took the charge, as Gill contributed just 19 runs. However, with this partnership, the duo achieved a milestone. The duo of the Indian skipper and Gill became the fastest Indian pair to complete 1000 ODI runs. They achieved this milestone in the 13th inning, while the previous record was 14 innings. It’s worth noting that Rohit previously held this record with KL Rahul.

In the match, Rohit continued his dominance with the bat as he scored his third half-century of the tournament. He also became the highest run scorer in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 with 194 runs in 4 innings at an average of 64.67. He surpassed Bangladesh batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had 193 runs in two innings. However, he left the tournament due to an injury and is not available to chase Rohit.

Can India win the ticket to the finale against Sri Lanka?

Despite Rohit Sharma’s half-century, Indian batters failed to play against Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage. With this amazing bowling performance, Wellalage took five important wickets and restricted India to a mere total of 213/10 in 49.1 overs. Apart from Rohit, Ishan Kishan (33), KL Rahul (39) and Axar Patel (26) contributed with the bat for India.

If India manages to chase this total, they will be through to the finals of the Asia Cup in 2023. After a thumping victory against arch-rivals Pakistan on Monday, it’s a golden opportunity for the Indian team to qualify for the finals. It will also boost their morale ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, defending less than 250 on this ground seems like a difficult task.
