Indian Cricket Board are yet to assemble selection committee for Sri Lanka series
After the turn of 2023, India is set to host Sri Lanka in a white-ball format. The series will consist of three-match T20I series, followed by many ODIs. However, with only two weeks left at the start of the series, the Indian Cricket Board hasn’t been able to assemble the selection committee that will select the players. Since the board sacked the entire selection committee last month, the new committee hasn’t been formed.
After a while, the board asked for fresh applications for the job. Hundreds of applicants have applied but over the course of one month, the committee hasn’t been formed. Now, India’s next series is coming closer with every passing and the team needs to assemble the squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Board official has said that the committee would be assembled by the last week of this year.
“We should appoint new selection committee by next week. The process will be completed. If not, we already have selection committee in place and they will be asked to pick the team”, said a top official in the Indian Cricket Board.
The ‘Sacked’ selection committee can still select the team: Reports
Notably, the ‘Sacked’ committee is still eligible to select the team for the Sri Lanka series. However, they can’t make a change in the captaincy as the board is reportedly looking to change India’s T20I captain.
“The current selection committee has no say in anything other than recommendation and team selection. Making a change in captaincy is a big call and without a fixed selection committee will be a big blunder. Not all are in favour of Rohit’s removal. He has only been the captain for a year,” another board official close to the development told InsideSport.
“The new selection committee will be finalized and announced before the end of this month. Venkatesh Prasad is one of the most experienced cricketers who has applied for the role. No formal discussions have happened but he is likely to get vote of confidence from all as new chairman”, informed source close to top bosses.
