The final of the Indian T20 League 2022 saw its end with the contest between Gujarat and Rajasthan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Rajasthan won the toss and decided to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the Men in Pink a brisk start. He was dismissed on the 4th over of the innings after he has scored 22 runs off 16 deliveries. When Jaiswal walked back to the pavilion, Rajasthan’s score was 32 for 1 in 4 overs. As the left-hander walked back things started to get tougher for the batters. The batters were not middling the deliveries as the pitch kept getting slower. Big names in the Rajasthan batting lineup like Sanju Samson (14 of 11) and Shimron Hetmyer (11 of 12) failed to impact the scoring rate. Wickets kept falling for them but Buttler tried to battle it out at one end. He held the innings together till the 13th over the innings. Buttler was ultimately dismissed by Hardik Pandya after he scored 39 runs off 35 balls. It was a good knock from the English batter given the way the pitch was behaving. On the back of some important contributions by Riyan Parag (15 of 15) and Trent Boult (11 of 7), Rajasthan managed to post a fighting total of 130 runs for the loss of 9 wickets from their 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers for Gujarat was their skipper Hardik Pandya who picked up three wickets for 17 runs from his quota of four overs.
Rajasthan rocked Gujarat early in the chase as Prasidh Krishna picked up the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha (5 of 7) in the second over of the innings. Saha was soon followed by Matthew Wade (10 of 14) in the fifth over of the innings. Gujarat was reeling at 23 for 2 at this stage. Hardik Pandya walked to the middle at this stage and steadied the ship Shubman Gill. The duo stitched a substantial partnership and gradually took the pressure of the chase. Hardik Pandya got himself settled and as he got a grasp of the conditions he started batting more fluently. But much against the run of play Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Hardik Pandya (34 of 30) in the 14th over of the innings and broke a 63 runs partnership between Gill and Pandya. This wicket gave Rajasthan a glimmer of hope, though the knock from Pandya had set the stage for the finishers of the Gujarat team.
But Shubman Gill (45 of 43 ) and David Miller (32 of 19) remained unbeaten till the end and took their team over the line. Gujarat won the match by seven wickets with 11 balls remaining in the match. The wait for Rajasthan’s second title adds to the 14 years. The whole stadium erupted as Gill scored the winning runs for his team. Gujarat makes history by winning their maiden ITL title in their debut season.
