Delhi squared off against Kolkata in the 41st match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The pitch provided enough for the bowlers and hence a close fight between the bat and the ball was witnessed.

Delhi won the toss and invited Kolkata to bat first. The men in purple started their batting effort on the wrong note as Aaron Finch (3 off 7) was dismissed in the second over of the innings. Venkatesh Iyer did not last long as he was the second wicket to fall for Kolkata in the fifth over. They were two down for just 22 runs in 4.3 overs. The Delhi bowlers strangled and suffocated the Kolkata batters as just 13 runs were conceded in the next 17 deliveries. The pressure of not enough runs being scored got the better of the debutant Baba Indrajith (6 off 8) as he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the eighth over. Kuldeep followed it up with the wicket of Sunil Narine of the very next delivery and Kolkata was down to 35 for four in 7.3 overs. Shreyas Iyer along with Nitish Rana stabilized the Kolkata innings with a 48 runs partnership and also provided a much-needed momentum to Kolkata’s progress.

Shreyas Iyer (42 off 37 ) fell prey to Kuldeep in the 14th over and was followed by Andre Russell in the same over. Nitish Rana however went from strength to strength at the opposite end and kept the innings together for the men in purple. He put together a partnership of 62 runs with Rinku Singh (23 off 16) and helped Kolkata to a fighting total of 146 runs from their 20 overs. Rana played a resilient knock of 57 runs off 34 deliveries hitting three fours and four sixes. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi with four wickets for 14 runs from his four overs. Mustafizur was also brilliant as he picked up three wickets in the innings.

Delhi’s start was shaky as they lost Prithvi Shaw on the very first ball. He was soon followed by Mitchell Marsh (13 off 7) in the second over and Delhi was reeling at 17 for 2 in 1.3 overs. David Warner took Lalit Yadav along with him and formed a partnership of 65 runs putting Delhi’s chase back on track. Warner was dismissed in the 10th over of the inning. He played a counter-attacking knock of 42 runs off 26 deliveries hitting eight fours during his stay. As Warner departed Delhi’s chase was once again derailed with two more quick wickets. Rishabh Pant (2 off 5) and Lalit Yadav (22 off 29) were dismissed off successive deliveries and Delhi was five down for 84 runs in the 12th over. The match was in balance and it was a test of nerves between the two teams.

Axar Patel looked in good touch and was steadily guiding his team towards victory along with Rovman Powell. Just when the duo looked comfortable and it appeared that Delhi will win the match easily, Axar Patel was dismissed. Patel (24 off 17) and Powell misjudged a couple and as a result, the left hander was run out. As Delhi lost Patel, they were left at 113after 15 overs. The equation at this stage was 34 off 30 balls, but the number of wickets remaining was the problem for the chasing time. Powell (33 off 16) stayed their till the end and guided his team to a four wicket win with six balls remaining in the match. It was the fourth win for Delhi in eight matches, while Kolkata lost their sixth from nine matches.
