Bangalore squared off against Rajasthan in the 39th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The spectators were treated to an even contest between the bat and the ball on a sporting pitch.
Bangalore won the toss in the match and invited the opposition to bat first. Rajasthan’s start was a shaky one as they lost Devdutt Padikkal (8 off 9) in the second over of the innings. Jos Buttler was again the key cog for Rajasthan in their batting as they hoped that he will play the role of the aggressor while Ravichandra Ashwin at number three keeps rotating the strike at the other end. The duo formed a partnership of 22 runs before they were dismissed of two successive deliveries. The key wicket of Jos Buttler was picked up by Josh Hazlewood in the fifth over of the innings and it was a shock from Rajasthan which they failed to revive.
As Buttler walked back into the pavilion, the Rajasthan batting started to fall weak. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and no formidable partnership came from the batters. Riyan Parag was the only player showing real resilience in the middle and played a determined knock of 56 runs off 31 deliveries staying unbeaten. Barring Parag, Sanju Samson (27 off 21) and Daryll Mitchell (16 off 24) got starts in the middle order but failed to convert it into something big. On the back of these efforts, Rajasthan reached a competitive total of 144 runs from their 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets. Three bowlers from the Bangalore camp- Josh Hazlewood, Mohammed Siraj and Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets each.
Bangalore was looking for a steady start in their chase of a moderate score. But their start was rocked by the early dismissal of Virat Kohli (9 off 10), who was sent in as an opener for the match. After an early blow, there was a small partnership of 27 runs between Faf du Plessis (23 off 21) and Rajat Patidar (16 of 16). But they lost Du Plessis and Maxwell (0 off 1) of two successive balls and were derailed from the chase. They were 58 for four down in the 10th over.
Bangalore at this stage was largely hoping that Dinesh Karthik rescues them once again from the situation. But it was not DK’s (6 off 4) day as he fell prey to a terrible mix-up in the 13th over of the innings. With players like Shabaz Ahmed and Wanindu Hasaranga at the crease and with only their bowlers to come in, the balance of the match was not much in their favor. As the 15th over finished in the chase, Bangalore was 90 for 6 down and needed 55 runs off the last 30 balls. The bowler of the Rajasthan team gradually finalized the victory for their team as they dismissed Bangalore for 115 runs in the 20th over. Bangalore lost their fourth match in the tournament by 29 runs, while Rajasthan ensured their sixth win.
