New Zealand’s batting sensation and top-order batsman Rachin Ravindra recently got candid after the post-match ceremony to talk about his emotions while playing in the Bengaluru Stadium for the first time in the ODI World Cup 2023. Having his roots in Karnataka, Ravindra represents New Zealand and has had a stellar performance in his debut World Cup season.

New Zealand recently beat Sri Lanka to almost qualify for the semifinals of the ODI World Cup and being the local boy in Bangalore, Rachin Ravindra gave an amazing performance in the game. Ravindra broke two records during the game, the first of scoring the most runs in a maiden World Cup edition, beating England’s Jonny Bairstow (532).

Second, becoming the Player with the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup under the age of 25 after beating Sachin Tendulkar (523). After the game against Sri Lanka, Rachin Ravindra also visited his home as his mother offered her prayers to God while protecting Ravindra from the evil eye.

‘It’s a pretty surreal feeling. Playing in Bangalore with my extended family’ – Rachin Ravindra

While talking to the official broadcaster of the ODI World Cup 2023 after beating Sri Lanka, Rachin Ravindra said, “It’s a pretty surreal feeling. Playing in Bangalore with my extended family is always special and I won’t take for granted when the crowd chants your name. To be compared to the great man (Sachin Tendulkar) is something I never dreamt of. Luckily it all worked out. 6 to 12 months ago I was not in the frame.”

“Accolades and individual things aside, good to be in the playoffs. [on taking the catch that gave Ajaz his 10-fer in that Test] The most nervy moment of my career. I was lucky to catch that, it was all Ajaz’s work. I’m lucky to have come here through my teenage years, and experience the practice wickets – helps me a lot. Nice wicket and fast outfields, try to adapt as best I can,” he said.

While talking about playing with his idols in the ODI World Cup, he said, “Talk to Devon, talk to Kane who have played in the IPL, get golden nuggets from them whenever I can. Still water under the bridge and we will be watching those games. I idolised Kane, idolised a lot of guys in this World Cup, Kohli, Root, Steve Smith and I felt ooh, I’m playing with them.”

“I’m lucky to have that freedom from the guys. Thank you to the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the crowd for all the support. It is a special place in my heart and I look forward to playing more cricket here,” concluded Ravindra after expressing his gratitude towards the spectators present in the Bengaluru stadium.
