Hyderabad faced Chennai in the 46th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The batters of both the teams made the most of perfect batting conditions and the affair turned out to be a high-scoring thriller.

Hyderabad won the toss and put Chennai into bat. What the fans witnessed for the next one and a half-hour was pure carnage. The Men in Yellow opted for a new opener in Devon Conway to partner with Ruturaj Gaikwad. The duo gave Chennai an absolute dynamic start.  In the initial stages, Conway was batting steadily just rotating the strike and letting Gaikwad do the majority of the scoring. But as the two settled down they started tearing the Hyderabad bowling apart.

They broke many records on their way to an epic partnership of 182 runs before Gaikwad was dismissed. He scored 99 runs off 57 deliveries hitting six fours and six sixes. He was the first wicket to fall for Chennai in the 18th over of the innings. Devon Conway stayed unbeaten till the end and scored 85 runs off 55 deliveries in the process. On the back of their openers, Chennai reached a mammoth total of 202 runs from their 20 overs.

Hyderabad got off to a blazing start as their openers brought up a very quick fifty runs partnership. But in the sixth over of the innings, Mukesh Choudhary brought Chennai back into the match. He picked up the wickets of Abhishek Sharma (39 off 24) and Rahul Tripathi (0 of 1) of two successive deliveries and gave a rude shock to the progress of the men in orange. Aiden Markaram walked out into the middle and looked in prime touch during his stay of 10 deliveries, in which he scored 17 runs. But he was dismissed by Mitchell Santner and his team was three down for 88 runs in the 10th over. Kane Williamson was going steadily at the other end and got a good partner in Nicholas Pooran. But in the 15th over of the innings Dwaine Pretorius took the wicket of Williamson and once again put Hyderabad into the back foot.

They were stationed at 131 for at the end of the 15th over and needed 72 runs of the last 5 overs. The onus of taking Hyderabad home was on the West Indian Nicholas Pooran. He gave his best in his attempt to take Hyderabad across the line but the target proved a bit too much. Pooran scored 64 runs off 33 balls hitting three fours and six sixes. Hyderabad finished at a total of 189 runs and lost the match by 13 runs. This was Chennai’s third win the tournament of nine matches, while Hyderabad lost their fourth in nine matches.
