Lucknow took on Bangalore in the 31st match of the Indian T20 League 2022.

KL Rahul decided to field first after winning the toss. Bangalore had a nightmarish start to their innings. They lost two wickets in the first over for just seven runs. One of these two early blows for Bangalore was that of Virat Kohli, who scored a golden duck. Wickets kept falling for Bangalore from one end, while skipper Faf du Plessis continued scoring the runs at the other. Within the eighth over of the innings Bangalore was 62 for four wickets down with Maxwell and Kohli back in the hut. Shabaz Ahmed came into the middle at this stage and played a brilliant supporting role to his captain. Ahmed kept handing the strike over to Du Plessis who was looking in prime touch.

Ahmed was dismissed for 26 off 22 balls by a runout. Du Plessis however, did not deter from his objective of giving his team a formidable total and continued further. He was dismissed in the penultimate ball of the innings after he scored 96 runs off 64 deliveries, hitting 11 fours and two sixes. On the back of their captain’s brilliant effort, Bangalore reached a total of 181 runs in their 20 overs. Jason Holder was the best of the bowlers from Lucknow picking up two wickets for 25 runs in his four overs.

Lucknow started shakily in the pursuit of their target of 190 runs. They lost Quinton de Kock early in the third over when they has just 17 runs on the board. KL Rahul however tried to take his team out of the initial shock but was dismissed in the eighth over of the innings for 30 runs off 24 deliveries. Lucknow at this stage was 64 for three down, when Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda got together. The duo stitched a partnership of 36 runs and steadied the Bangalore ship. Hooda was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings when his score was 13 off 14 deliveries. But with the partnership, Lucknow got themselves back on track and now the stage was set for a thrilling finish, with Krunal Pandya looking dangerous. But Maxwell dismissed him for 42 off 28 and the match was in the balance at the stage. After 15 overs Lucknow required 65 runs off 30 deliveries, the required rate was 13 runs per over. The responsibility of taking Lucknow home depended now on the shoulders of Marcus Stoinis.

Stoinis’ dismissal in the 19th over by Josh Hazlewood nearly ensured the win for Bangalore. In the end Lucknow fell short of the target by 19 runs, losing their third match of the season. Josh Hazlewood was brilliant with the ball picking up 4 wickets for 25 runs from his four overs. The all round team performance ensured Bangalore, their fifth win of the tournament.
