In the 66th match of the Indian T20 League2022 Kolkata squared off against Lucknow. The batters displayed the best of their skills on a sporty DY Patil Stadium pitch. The fans remained witness to the most enthralling contest of the tournament.
Lucknow won the toss and KL Rahul decided to bat first. The next one and half hours remained witness to some masterclass batting by Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul, the openers of Lucknow. Both the players complemented each other and planned out their innings perfectly. They started steadily and scored 44 runs off the first six overs. After this De Kock slowly started taking on the bowlers while Rahul git himself fitted into the anchor role. The two batters looked in total control as they made the Kolkata bowlers appear helpless in front of them. Both of them remained unbeaten through the innings and posted a total of 210 runs on the board from 20 overs. De Kock scored 140 runs from 70 balls hitting 10 sixes and 10 fours, while Rahul scored 68 runs from 51 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes in his innings.
Kolkata was given a jolt early in the pursuit of their mammoth total. Mohsin Khan picked up the wickets of Venkatesh Iyer (0 of 4) and Abhijeet Tomar (4 of 8) within the first three overs and left Kolkata reeling at 9 for 2 in 2.4 overs. Nitish Rana started bringing Kolkata back into the game with his counter-attacking knock of 42 runs in 22 balls. He was dismissed in the eighth over by Krishnappa Gowtham when Kolkata’s score was 65 for 3. Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings continued to carry the momentum forward provided by Rana and started moving closer to the target. But in the 14th over of the innings Stoinis picked up the all-important wicket of Shreyas Iyer (50 of 29). As the 15th over of the innings concluded Kolkata was 134 for 4 requiring 77 runs in their last 5 overs. From this stage, it was again Kolkata depending on their big man Andre Russell to take them through.
Lucknow tightened their grip on the match with Sam Billings’ (36 of 24) wicket in the 16th over. At this stage the match was wholly depending on Andre Russell for the Men in Purple. But it was Mohsin Khan (3 for 20 from 4 overs) who picked up the most important wicket at that stage of Russell (5 of 11) and nearly sealed the match for Lucknow. But Sunil Narine (21 of 7) and Rinku Singh(40 of 15) fought till the end and nearly got their team over the line. However, Lucknow held their nerves and stopped Kolkata at 208 and won the match by just 2 runs. With this defeat Kolkata lost their 8th match from their 14 matches and bowed out of the tournament. While Lucknow finished their league stage with 9 wins from 14 matches.
