Mumbai and Hyderabad locked horns in the 65th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. On a pitch that looked slow, the batters displayed excellent skills to gift the spectators a high-scoring thriller.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. The Hyderabad team used Priyam Garg as their opener along with  Abhishek Sharma. Kane Williamson demoted himself down the order owing to his current lean patch with the bat. Abhishek Sharma (9 of 10) failed to impress in the match but Garg along with Rahul Tripathi laid a good foundation for their team with a partnership of 78 runs from 47 deliveries. Garg (42 of 26) was the second wicket to fall for Hyderabad when the team’s score was 96 runs in the 10th over.

Tripathi continued with his good work as Nicholas Pooran joined him in the middle. The duo put together a partnership of 76 runs from 42 balls and the stage was set for a powerful finish. However, Pooran (38 of 22) and Tripathi (76 of 44) were dismissed in quick succession and that led to Hyderabad losing a bit of momentum. On the back of the powerful start, Hyderabad managed to reach a total of 193 runs from their 20 overs. Ramandeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai picking up 3 wickets for 20 runs from his 3 overs.

In their pursuit of a big chase, Mumbai started steadily and looked to preserve their wickets for going big in the latter half of the innings. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan put up a partnership of 95 runs from 64 balls. Sharma (48 of 36) was the first wicket to fall for his team as Washington Sundar picked him up. He was soon followed by Ishan Kishan (43 of 34) in the 12th over and Mumbai was 2 down for 101 runs. Umran Malik picked up two more wickets in the form of Tilak Varma (8 of 9) and Daniel Sams (15 of 11) and put Mumbai on the back foot. After 15 overs Mumbai was 127 for 4 wickets down and required 67 runs from 30 balls.

Tim David however, played a knock that nearly change the complexion of the game. he hit 4 sixes of T. Natarajan in the 18th over and picked up 26 runs of it. But David (46 of 18) fell prey to a run-out and that once again shifted the balance towards Hyderabad. Bhuvneswar bowled a maiden wicket penultimate over and left 19 runs to be chased for Mumbai in the 20th over. Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled a decent last over and restricted Hyderabad to 190 runs. The Men in Orange won the match by 3 runs and prevailed in nail biting encounter. This was Hyderabad’s 6th win in the tournament of 13 games, while Mumbai lost their 10th in 13 outings.
