The 59th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 saw the arch-rivals Chennai and Mumbai take the field against each other. The venue for the match was the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mumbai won the toss and decided to field first in the match. Mumbai’s opening bowler Daniel Sams gave a jolt to the Chennai batting order in the first over. He picked up two wickets in the over. However, Devon Conway’s (0 of 1) dismissal grabbed a few eyes as the DRS was not available at that stage. But Chennai batter looked clueless against a potent Mumbai attack on the night and kept losing wickets. Within the first six overs, Chennai was down to 32 for 5 and were reeling. The batter in the middle at this stage was MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube. Chennai was in desperate need of a partnership and MSD special knock to have a chance in the match. But the partnership never came and Dhoni kept running out of partners.

Although after the dismissal of Shivam Dube (10 of 9), Dwayne Bravo put up a bit of resistance along with Dhoni, it was also not for long. Dwayne Bravo (12 of 15) was dismissed in the 13th over of the innings when Chennai’s score was 78 runs. After this, the tailenders put up little resistance against the Mumbai bowlers, and Chennai was bundled out for 97 runs in 16 overs. MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on 36 of 33 and was the lone warrior for his team. Daniel Sams was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai taking three wickets for 16 runs from his 4 overs.

Mumbai had a start similar to Chennai. The bowlers for the Men in Yellow looked in great rhythm and ripped the Mumbai top order apart. Rohit Sharma (18 of 14) and Ishan Kishan (6 of 5) were dismissed in within the fourth over of the innings and the Men in Blue and Gold were looking under serious pressure.  The bowlers kept the pressure on and reduced Mumbai to 36 for 4 in six overs. At this stage, the match looked to be on and it demanded nerves of steel for the remaining Mumbai batters to see this through. Nerves of steel was what Hrithik Shokeen And Tilak Varma displayed and slowly progressed towards the target.

The two young batter got Mumbai out of the hole with a partnership of 48 runs. When Hrithik Shokeen (18 of 23) was dismissed by Moeen Ali, Mumbai were well within the reach of the target and just required 17 runs off 44 deliveries to win the match. Tim David (16 of 7) and Tilak Varma (34 of 32) ensured Mumbai reach the target with five wickets in hand and 31 balls remaining in the match. This was Chennai’s 8th defeat in 12 matches and Mumbai won their third match in 12 outings. With this defeat Chennai are officially eliminated of the tournament.
