Star Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka over fitness concerns, Indian Cricket Board confirmed on Monday. The Board had earlier included him in the squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka starting on 10th January. Bumrah had last played for India in a T20I against Australia back in September last year.

Indian Cricket Board in a press release revealed the reason behind Bumrah’s unavailability. The release read, “Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build bowling resilience. This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure.”

Bumrah missed out on major multi-national tournaments Asia Cup and the 20-20 World Cup last year. A few weeks back, he shared a video where he was seen exercising in the ground on the path to his recovery. Fans were hoping that the speedster would return to the Indian team for the Sri Lanka assignment but it seems like he will take a little longer to return to full fitness.

Earlier, in a press release, the Indian Cricket Board had added Bumrah’s name to India’s roster for the Sri Lanka series. The release read, “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.”

Indian Cricket Board to manage workload of senior players in lead up to the World Cup

The Indian Cricket Board held a review meeting on 1st January and prepared a roadmap for the upcoming World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup 2023. One of the major decisions taken during the meeting was working with the Indian T20 League franchises to manage the workload of senior players during the tournament. With the Border Gavaskar Trophy scheduled in February, the team management doesn’t want to rush the pace spearhead into the team and want him to be fully hit before he hits the ground running.

The three ODIs between India and Sri Lanka will be played on January 10 (Guwahati), January 12 (Kolkata) and January 15 (Thiruvananthapuram).

India’s squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on Bumrah’s unavailability for Sri Lanka series. Here are some of the Tweets:
