Both the teams were favorites entering into this but, it was Dambulla Aura (DA) who defeated B-Love Kandy (BLK) by 20 runs in match number 19 of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Earlier, it was B-Love Kandy who won the toss and elected to bowl first. But both the openers of DA started off on a positive with a steady batting partnership of 61 runs for the first wicket but, the team kept on losing wickets at regular intervals which resulted in them getting up to a formidable total of 162 runs in their 20 overs. The star of the show were Avishka Fernando (41), Sadeera Samarawickrama (31), and Ben McDermott (37).
In reply to this total, B-Love Kandy managed only to score 142 runs in their 20 overs. Dinesh Chandimal was the lone warrior with bat for DA as the right-hand batter scored a half-century before getting out to Hayden Kerr. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva was the difference maker between both the team as the off-break bowler delivered a match-winning spell of 4/6 in just 2 overs and turned the game on its head and helped Dambula Aura retain their top spot.

A thrilling match was anticipated because both B-L Kandy and Dambulla Aura had already qualified for the playoffs of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL), as both teams were vying for the league’s top spot. In addition, neither team wanted to lose as the tournament’s final stretch approached since it could harm their spirits and it was evident from the way both team participated in the game but the magical spell from the skipper de Silva proved to be the difference.
Notably, league leaders Dambulla Aura had won their last four games in a straight. On August 4, they lost to B-Love Kandy. Since then, they have significantly improved as both bowlers and batters have performed admirably thus far. When it comes to Kandy, they dropped their opening two league games but turned things around in their final four, winning each and every one of them. In the most recent game, Mohammad Haris struck 81 off 51 deliveries, but the middle order failed to perform to its ability, and that is still a cause for concern.
