‘Isse badhia match nahi dekha’ – Fans react as Glenn Maxwell singlehandedly wins match for Australia against Afghanistan in ODI World Cup 2023
Australia won an incredible game of cricket. Glenn Maxwell singlehandedly won the match for the former world champions. The knock of Maxwell just killed the game totally for Afghanistan. Even with a limping leg, the aggressive batter singlehandedly won the match for his team. It was one of those instances where a batter won the match for his team with his own might.
Opting to bat first, Afghanistan did well to register their highest-ever score in the history of the ODI World Cup. The Asian side scored 291 runs against a good bowling attack consisting of the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, and Glenn Maxwell. Ibrahim Zadran scored a good hundred for his team and helped them to post a very good total on the board.
The youngster became the first batter from Afghanistan to score a hundred in the ODI World Cup. In his stay in the middle, Zadran scored 129 runs in 143 balls. At the other end, Rashid Khan played a good cameo of 35 runs, which helped Afghanistan to post a very good total on the board. A chase of 292 was not easy. Afghanistan bowlers were on fire in their first 20 overs.
Glenn Maxwell’s day in Wankhede stadium
Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed the likes of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh early. Azmatullah Omarzai continued the good work of bowling and dismissed the likes of David Warner and Josh Inglis. Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed via a runout. Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc could not stay longer, as Australia was done at one stage with a score of 91/7 chasing a big total. Afghanistan was a clear favourite to win at that point.
What followed it was the Glenn Maxwell show. The batter earlier survived a close call and was dropped by Mujeeb Zadran. Following it, Maxwell scored a double hundred. With a good support from Pat Cummins at the other end, Maxwell singlehandedly scored runs and won the match for Australia. The aggressive batter scored the first ever double hundred in ODIs while chasing a target.
