Shreyas Iyer is currently in the squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies. He was even selected in the playing XI for the first match of the series on 22 July 2022. However, he managed to score 54 runs off 57 balls while batting at the number three for India.

He also stitched a solid partnership with skipper, Shikhar Dhawan as India put up a mammoth score of 308 runs by losing seven wickets in 50 overs. He also smashed two sixes along with five boundaries. But, former Indian player, Ajay Jadeja criticized his batting approach throughout his innings.

Shreyas Iyer had a decent game I would say. He would be disappointed though.” – Ajay Jadeja

Speaking to Fan Code at innings break, Jadeja said that Iyer came into the international arena with so much promise. But, suddenly he failed to deliver it on the big stages. He said: “I feel for the man. I mean…he walked into the Indian side with so much promise. A year ago we would thinking about talking about him as the future India captain and leading the side. He starts off great and has a Test match hundred. Suddenly, a couple of times he has got out to short balls and not going into the technical factors behind it, but that is playing so much on his mind that you saw that in this innings,”

He also shared that Iyer’s innings lacked intent, just like Shikhar Dhawan as he should have scored a hundred against such a bowling lineup of the Caribbeans with a more attacking approach.

“The way he approached today was very similar to Shikhar Dhawan. So you need a big score to get out of it. He had a decent game I would say. He would be disappointed though. With this bowling attack, you would want to make the most of it. Get a 100 and nobody will have anything to say. With this score, you cannot say that he is over the problem he has had. You cannot look at this game like we did to India versus England. For me, this is a practice game,” Ajay Jadeja concluded. Meanwhile, Iyer will be in action again for the second ODI against the same opponent on 24 July 2022.
