The 16th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled to kick start on August 30. The first match of the tournament is set to be played between Pakistan and Nepal in Multan, Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced a 15-member squad for the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup. The last edition of the Asia Cup was won by Sri Lanka, which was played in the United Arab Emirates.

India will lock horns with Pakistan in their opening fixture on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is a possibility that the two teams will face each other two times more in the tournament, once in Super 4 and once in the final. Star India pacer, Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from his back injury and has made it to the squad for the Asia Cup 2023.

Sanju Samson included as a back-up in Asia Cup 2023 squad

Bumrah is currently participating in the T20I series against Ireland. In the Ireland series, the 29-year-old pacer became the first Indian captain to win the Player of the Match award on captaincy debut in the shortest format of international cricket. The Chairman of Selectors, Ajit Agarkar announced the 18-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023 in the press conference on Monday, August 21.

Two star India batters, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have made a comeback to the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2023 after recovering from their respective injuries. Young left-hand batter, Tilak Varma got a surprise entry to the squad after making his debut in the T20Is. The Men in Blue have retained, star India all-rounder, Hardik Pandya as the vice captain of the team.

The batter from Kerala, Sanju Samson, has been included in the squad as a back-up player. Star India leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal has been ignored for the selection despite performing very well for the team in the past. This is one of the big exclusions by the selection committee, keeping in mind the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 which is scheduled to take place later this year in the month of October-November in India.
